Manchester United set to trump Leicester City to Ben Grist
According to Football Insider, Manchester United have gained the upper edge over Leicester City in the race to land Grimsby Town starlet Ben Grist.
The 16-year-old is earning himself much attention from a number of big clubs. The likes of Liverpool and Chelsea are keen on him while an unnamed top Scottish team have also made enquiries.
It was reported earlier this month that Leicester was leading the race to land the youngster. The tables now appear to have turned with United in the forefront. The Red Devils are keen to pull out all stops and are confident of landing their man.
United are expected to pay a fee of around £500,000 in compensation for Grist once the deal is finalised. The teenager first caught the eye after being named on the bench for Grimsby’s EFL Trophy clash with Harrogate Town last September.
Then just 15, he would have become the Mariners youngest ever player if he made it onto the pitch. However, it was not to be and the honour went to Louis Boyd instead.
Grimsby had a forgettable campaign last season and were relegated to the National League, the fifth tier of English football. This could pave the way for the youngster to say goodbye to the Mariners.
With Brexit rules limiting English clubs from signing overseas talent under the age of 18, United are now looking in the local market for promising players. Whether Grist will join up with the United Under-18s next season remains to be seen.
