Manchester United not the only team in the fray for Cristian Romero
According to an Italian journalist, Gianluigi Longari on Twitter, Manchester United are still just exploring the feasibility of signing Argentine defender Cristian Romero.
While the Red Devils have made contact with Atalanta, the deal is far from done. The 23 -year-old appears to have a number of suitors, all keen on him after an excellent 2020/21 campaign.
The player himself appears to have an interest in certain clubs. Romero still has his best years ahead of him and it is no surprise that he is currently under the scanner.
Technically, Romero belongs to Juventus, and is on loan at Atalanta until 2022. The Italian media, however, is sure that the latter will enforce the option to buy him in a €16m permanent deal this summer.
Their plan would be to make an immediate profit by selling him for a lot more. Given the performances he made last season, it is a fair assumption.
According to an earlier report, Atalanta are willing to sell the player for around €45m. This will make him the Italian side’s costliest ever sale.
It is no secret that United are in the market for a new defender. Romero represents a cheaper option than the likes of Jules Kounde and Raphael Varane, who are also on the Red Devils’ radar.
Whether the interest will lead into something more concrete in the weeks to come remains to be seen.

Capable of also playing at right-back, Romero is versatile enough to do a job for the Red Devils at the back. At 23, he is still about to enter his prime and could very well develop into a better player at Old Trafford.
Romero has represented his country at both the Under-20 and Under-23 levels but is yet to win a senior cap.
