Diego Forlan expects Edinson Cavani to thrive at Manchester United alongside Harry Kane or Erling Haaland

According to PA News Agency (h/t Manchester Evening News), former Manchester United star Diego Forlan has backed Edinson Cavani to impress playing alongside potentially Harry Kane or Erling Haaland.

The 34-year-old veteran penned a contract extension that will see him stay at Old Trafford for another this. This has, however, done little to stem rumours of the club’s interest in both Kane and Haaland.

Both are amongst the best in their positions and are coming off the back of prolific seasons for Tottenham Hotspur and Borussia Dortmund respectively.

While signing either player is easier said than done, Forlan does not believe it will impact Cavani adversely. The Uruguayan has shown he has what it takes to compete alongside the best and could continue to do so in the future.

Forlan has dismissed suggestions that the arrival of either Kane or Haaland will impact Cavani’s position in the team. He believes the newcomer is more likely to partner the Uruguayan upfront rather than take his place in the lineup.

“I don’t think if one of them (Kane or Haaland) is going to come, if they have the opportunity to do it, then Cavani or the player who arrives to Old Trafford is going to be on the bench.”

Cavani has never shied away from competition before and it does appear as if he will start doing so now. The veteran after all held his own alongside Luis Suarez at the international level.

The same can be said of his career at the club level as well. He thrived alongside Ezequiel Lavezzi at Napoli before sharing the spotlight with Zlatan Ibrahimovic and later Neymar and Kylian Mbappe at Paris Saint-Germain.

Forlan believes Cavani welcomes competition and judging from the past, it would appear to be true.

“He (Cavani) has been playing in Europe for so many years with competition – PSG, Napoli and also the national team. He likes competition.”

A veteran of the game, Cavani is one of the finest strikers in European football over the course of the last decade. While he may be in his twilight years, he still packs a punch and can impress when given the opportunity.

Anyone who has watched him play for us last season would agree to the same.
