Deschamps reveals why he dropped Manchester United star Anthony Martial for the Euros
Manchester United striker Anthony Martial has once again missed out on a major international tournament with France, this time the Euros.
The 26-year-old was omitted from the Les Bleus side that won the 2018 World Cup in Russia. It was a sense of deja vu as he was once again left out of the France squad that will take part in this summer’s Euros.
According to Manchester Evening News, France manager Didier Deschamps has revealed that the United ace was left out due to his injury. The striker has not featured for club or country since March.
“Anthony Martial would have been here, but he is not available. His condition does not allow it.”
Ir is a bitter pill for Martial to swallow given that he has just returned to training. Deschamps’ comments are curious given that the striker remains in contention for the Europa League final later this month.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirmed yesterday that Martial is enthusiastic about making the showpiece event and is in contention to do so. With a few weeks to go before the Euros, there would have been enough time for Martial to prove his fitness.
It is possible that the decision was factored in due to the striker’s lack of match fitness. With just two games to go in the season, there is less time for him to get back to his best.
Martial has also endured a difficult season that is a far cry from the prolific one he showcased in 2019/20. While it is unfortunate, one can see Deschamps’ point.

It is perhaps ironic that Martial could have made the squad had the tournament taken place last year. Coming off a prolific season with United, there would have been little reason for Deschamps to omit him. Unfortunately a year on, this has changed much.
