Manchester United in touch with Sporting Lisbon over Nuno Mendes

According to The Sun, Manchester United are in touch with Sporting Lisbon regarding their teenage sensation Nuno Mendes.

The 18-year-old made his debut for Lisbon last season. He has since emerged as a key player for the Portuguese giants as they wrapped up their first league title in 19 years this season.

Mendes is one of the standout talents of his generation and is amongst the best young left-backs in European football. He has made 35 appearances for Lisbon this season, scoring once and assisting two more. (h/t Transfermarkt)

United are currently in talks over a deal that could cost around £52million. Mendes has the same agent as Bruno Fernandes and hopefully, it will help ease any barriers that may arise.

The Red Devils face competition from Manchester City, who have also spoken to the player’s agent, Miguel Pinho. They have already informed the Cityzens that it will take more than £55m for them to part ways with their prized starlet.

Lisbon for their part is in no hurry to seal the deal. They are keen to see if Mendes will make the Portugal squad for the summer’s European Championships.

Earning a place in Fernando Santos’ squad will further boost Mendes’ reputation and value. That would be good news for Sporting who can land themselves a lucrative payday.

Another report by Daily Mail states that club president Frederico Varandas will only let Mendes go if his £60m release clause is met.

What signing Mendes will mean for the future of Alex Telles remains to be seen. The Brazilian has done well but has found his opportunities limited thanks to a resurgent Luke Shaw.

Adding Mendes to the mix will only complicate matters further for the 28-year-old.
