Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes names Jack Grealish as a rival for the player of the year award
Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes is enjoying an excellent season. The Portuguese sensation enjoyed a brilliant start to life at Old Trafford last January and has taken it to new heights this season.
With 27 goals and 17 assists, he heads both categories for United this season. A look at this season’s top ten scorers in the Premier League offers an interesting glimpse into the Portuguese sensation’s impact.
The 26-year-old is the only player in the top ten who is not a forward. Given the numbers he has put up, it is little surprise that he is spoken of as a player of the year contender.
Another midfielder who has been pivotal to his team’s fortunes this season is Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish. The Villans, who just about avoided relegation last season, could very well finish in the top ten this season.
While Grealish’s return of 7 goals and 12 assists pales in front of Fernandes, few will argue that he has not had a similar impact at Villa.
Fernandes for one certainly thinks so. Speaking to Manutd.com (h/t Birmingham Mail), he name-dropped Grealish as a player who is a threat to him winning the player of the year award.
“Grealish, before his injuries, was being really, really good.”
No dearth of competition
While the Villa skipper is certainly a contender, injuries could very well have prevented him from making a bigger statement. Others in the fray include Ruben Dias and Kevin de Bruyne, who have both impressed as Manchester City won the Premier League title.
Moreover, Harry Kane and Mohammed Salah too continue to rack up goals and assists despite their clubs not doing too well this season.
The last United player to win the Premier League Player of the Season award was Nemanja Vidic in 2011.

There is little doubt in our mind that Fernandes deserves to win the accolade. In fact, the midfielder has single-handedly taken us up several notches.
The numbers he has put up are absurd for a midfielder and he does not look to be slowing down anytime soon. With three more matches to go, he could make a final push to ensure his candidature is taken more seriously.
