Barcelona and Manchester United to face off in striker hunt this summer
It is no secret that Manchester United are in need of a new striker going into the summer transfer window. According to Spanish outlet Sport (h/t Express), this has seen them on a collision course with Barcelona on several fronts.
The Catalans failed to replace Luis Suarez last summer and might have a bigger hole to fill if Lionel Messi leaves this summer. Ronald Koeman’s side have shown promise but will need some reinforcing if they are to compete at the continental level.
United have been long time admirers of Erling Haaland. We have missed out on the player twice before and could do so once again. Barcelona too are keen on the player and can make our job tougher in the offseason.
The Nou Camp outfit are also eyeing alternatives if they miss out on the Norwegian striker. One of them is Lautaro Martinez, another striker United have previously been linked to.
The Argentine is young, dynamic and is a key player for Antonio Conte’s Inter Milan. He has played a key role as the Nerazzurri have won their first Scudetto in 11 years.
With Haaland looking set to stay on at Dortmund, any hope United may have had of making a move for Martinez will be met with competition.
The impossible and the past
Interestingly, Barcelona are also keeping tabs on Sergio Aguero. The Argentine is set to see out his contract at Manchester City this summer and will be available for free.
Signing him would have been a long shot given our rivalry with City and the player’s status as a club legend there. Nevertheless, the Catalans would once again have stood in our way.
Barcelona are also keen on former United winger Memphis Depay. The Dutchman has rebuilt his career at Lyon since leaving United in 2017.
