Marc Overmars tells Donny van de Beek to stay and fight for his place at Manchester United

According to NOS (h/t The Metro), Ajax Amsterdam chief Marc Overmars has dismissed suggestions that Manchester United star Donny van de Beek could return to the Netherlands.

The midfielder joined United only last summer after some stunning performances for Ajax. Although he scored on his debut, he has failed to stake his claim as a regular for the Red Devils.

A regular for Ajax, the Dutchman has made just two Premier League starts for United. With just one goal and two assists in 32 appearances, his time at Old Trafford has been less than impressive. (h/t Transfermarkt)

Despite rumours linking him with a transfer, Overmars believes Van de Beek’s future lies at the Theatre of Dreams. In fact, he expects the 24-year-old to stay and fight for his place.

“I think Donny should just fight, stay next year and try to claim a starting place.”

He went on to add that Van de Beek should not give up so quickly. Moving to a club such as United is no easy feat and given the competition, the Dutchman will do well to take his time and find his feet.

Ajax CEO and former United star Edwin van der Sar, however, has admitted that Van de Beek’s plight has saddened him. He is aware of the quality within the Red Devils ranks and knows that his county man faces a fight on his hands.

Whether the midfielder can eventually rise to the challenge remains to be seen.

The Dutchman arrived at Old Trafford as one of the rising young players in Eredivisie. He played a substantial role at Ajax in their 2019 Champions League campaign.

Van de Beek has his best years ahead of him. Whether he can rise through the adversity and establish himself as a key player remains to be seen.
