Dimitar Berbatov warns Edinson Cavani against a difficult situation at Manchester United
Speaking to Betfair ( h/t Manchester Evening News), former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov has signalled out a warning to current Red Devils star Edinson Cavani.
The Uruguayan veteran has stepped up in recent weeks and has made light work of Anthony Martial’s absence. Cavani scored twice and assisted two more as United swatted aside AS Roma in the first leg of the Europa League semifinals earlier this week.
The 34-year-old’s future at the club remains uncertain as his initial one-year deal continues to run out. Speaking after the Roma game, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted that he would do what it takes to keep his veteran ace for another season.
Berbatov has now warned Cavani that by staying he would be hitching a ride as a player who will have to be happy with a rotational role. To be fair, he has played the role to great effect this season.
“Cavani knows he is 34 and from time to time he will need to recharge his body, if he is happy with being rotated then I think he will stay.”
Berbatov believes Cavani should not be begrudged a move if he seeks it. He has done his job this season and it remains to be seen if he is willing to continue it for another season.
“If he has other plans for a different chapter in his career then he will say ‘thank you Manchester United, I’ve done my part and now I need to move on,’ and nobody can blame him for that because he has done his job perfect whilst he has been at the club.”
More pros than cons!
Solskjaer has been left mighty impressed by the United star’s performances at Old Trafford. Cavani is the club’s third-highest scorer this season. It is fair to say that he has proven himself to be a shrewd acquisition.
Given his age, it would be unrealistic to expect Cavani to start week in, week out. However his experience and nous makes him an impactful player to bring off the bench.

United are keen to bring in a striker this summer. The ideal situation will see us not just sign a new ace but also keep on Cavani for another season. Whether that happens remains to be seen.
