Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer gives his verdict on the European Super League
According to The Mirror, Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has given his verdict on the European Super League.
The Red Devils were among the 12 clubs who committed themselves to the controversial competition. They eventually withdrew after widespread criticism from both within and outside.
Solskjaer believes it is good that the club listened to the negative feedback they received and pulled out. He also added the importance of seeing the footballing community as a whole unite against the decision.
“I’m very happy the fans have voiced their opinions and we have listened to them.”
The Norwegian has in no uncertain terms expressed his disdain for the concept. With the spots of the 12 founding teams all but secure, it made a mockery of the spirit of fair and open competition.
“I didn’t like the concept, it has to be on sporting merit. I want to earn the right to play in Europe.”
Solskjaer believes that at times the fear of failure can be the driving force that can lead a team to glory. As someone who has experienced such glory first hand back in 1999, the United boss is as qualified as any to make the statement.
As top-class players, it is imperative that they try to play outside their comfort zone. This helps some dig deep and draw performances they scarcely knew themselves capable of.
“I’ve always felt and believed in stepping out of your comfort zone, being afraid of failure – that spurs you on, living on the edge a little bit.”

Elland Road was a cauldron of protest when Liverpool took on Leeds United last Monday. It remains to be seen what the situation will be like when United travel there this weekend.
It is fair to say that there is no time like now, when fan power has actually appeared to be more of a determining force.
