Manchester United News: Florentino Perez reiterates that the Super League is not dead

Manchester United joined other English teams in withdrawing from the controversial European Super League earlier this week. Or did they?

Rather than give up on the much-criticized initiative, Real Madrid and Super League president Florentino Perez continues to be defiant in the face of mass opposition.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the 74-year-old believes that the current situation is just a small hitch in the road and that the project is on standby.

Perez went on to add that the project could be continued sometime in the future. Interestingly, he went on to add that all 12 clubs initially involved penned the same contract.

This is not the first time that he has made a similar commitment. He had earlier warned both Manchester United and Manchester City against withdrawing, claiming the contracts they signed was binding.

However, that has done little to deter the clubs who have since pulled out. Perez now stands short of supporters but is unwilling to give it up.

Driven by self-interest!

Perez has his own reasons to live and die by his sword. The La Liga is not the money-making machine that the English Premier League is and is looking at a dire future.

The financially lucrative Super League would have come as a boon to the Spanish giants, who are in need of money. The same cannot be said of the English clubs who currently have six teams in the Forbes top-ten list this year.

It is difficult to believe that the breakaway league can proceed without the English teams involved. It would appear Perez knows that well.

Now that a decision has been made, United should in no capacity return to the Super League, in any format. Perez can crib and whine all he likes but it is not our responsibility to bail his team out from their problems. Especially not when it comes at the cost of a number of other teams not involved.

While Perez did admit that times are tough, he had no issues in dropping a massive wage packet in order to secure David Alaba ahead of this summer’s window. It would appear that there is nothing that the Real Madrid honcho won’t do to get his way.
