Transfer News: Edinson Cavani informs Ole Gunnar Solskjaer of his Manchester United future
According to Argentine outlet Doble Amarilla (h/t The Metro), Manchester United star Edinson Cavani has informed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer that he will be leaving the club in the summer.
The 34-year-old joined the Red Devils on deadline day last summer in a one year deal. While there is a provision to extend it for another season, he does not appear to be keen to exercise it.
With ten goals in 31 appearances, the veteran striker has largely fulfilled his role as an auxiliary marksman. He has scored in all of our last three games and is stepping up when needed.
United for their part are desperate to keep Cavani. However, the player feels unsettled at the club and is longing to see family, who have been unable to visit him since he arrived in Manchester.
Solskjaer tried to persuade Cavani that he would feel more at home once supporters are back in attendance. The player however appears to have made up his mind. He has since informed his manager of the decision after the win against Burnley.
Argentine giants Boca Juniors are leading the race for Cavani’s signature. A move to Buenos Aires will see him move within an hour’s journey by air from Uruguay.
A new era?
Cavani’s departure will add further pressure on United who are already in the market for a new striker. Anthony Martial has underperformed while Marcus Rashford is showing strains of being overutilized.
While Mason Greenwood has shown signs of being a clinical finisher, he still has much to develop being entrusted as the main man. In any case, there is little he can do alone.
