Transfer News: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer gives Edinson Cavani contract update at Manchester United
Speaking in an interview on Sky Sports (h/t Metro), Ole Gunnar Solskjaer revealed that Edinson Cavani has not made up his mind yet about extending his Manchester United contract.
This comes amid reports of Cavani wanting to join Boca Juniors in South America at the end of this season. The 34-year-old joined United just last summer, coming in on a free transfer from PSG.
And since then, he has played a vital role this season. His most recent contribution came in a stunning display against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
Cavani opened the scoring for United after the half-hour mark but had his goal harshly disallowed by VAR for Scott McTominay’s ‘foul’ on Son Heung-min in the build-up.
He finally had his name on the scoresheet in the 79th minute. The Uruguayan fired United in front after scoring from a diving header, resulting from a Mason Greenwood cross.
Caught in two minds
This was the former Napoli hitman’s 8th goal this season for United. And Solskjaer revealed after the game that Cavani is at crossroads regarding his future, with a decision yet to come.
“That’s up to Edi. He knows my feelings, I know his feelings. He’s not made up his mind yet.”
Cavani’s contract contains a 12-month extension clause that would see him stay at United for another year. But the Norwegian boss says that he understands why Cavani is thinking of reuniting with his family elsewhere.
“I understand it’s been a difficult year for everyone but for a new lad that doesn’t speak English and not to feel the English culture, to go and see people, to have friends around, it’s in the back of your head if this is what you want. You can’t have your family over.”

Cavani is undoubtedly a brilliant option to have up front and his goal-scoring pedigree can never be questioned. However, he is 34 years old and Solskjaer would need to consider replacements for him sooner than later.
