Southampton ready to rekindle interest in Manchester United youngster Brandon Williams

According to various sources (h/t The Southern Daily Echo), Southampton are ready to rekindle their interest in Manchester United youngster Brandon Williams.

Saints manager Ralph Hasenhuttl was keen to sign the 20-year-old in January. Unfortunately for him, United did not play ball.

With the summer window approaching, the Austrian manager still appears to hold interest in the young United ace. Southampton have impressed under Hasenhuttl and he appears to be preparing for the new season.

With Kyle Walker-Peters and Ryan Bertrand (whose contract expires in the summer) as the only two senior full-backs in the squad, Southampton’s interest in Williams is understandable.

The 20-year-old is capable of playing on either flank and has shown he has the potential to develop into a reliable player.

Williams enjoyed a promising breakout season last time around and ended up making 36 appearances. Unfortunately, he has had to play more of a bit-part role this time around. The 20-year-old has been limited to just 10 appearances this season. (h/t Transfermarkt)

Avenues being closed?

With Luke Shaw and Alex Telles locking in the left-back position, William’s prospects of overtaking either of them are minute. Meanwhile, on the other flank, Aaron Wan-Bissaka is the first-choice right-back and United are also keen to bring in a backup for him in the summer.

This could mean bad news for Williams, who should be taking the next step in his development about now. It would not come as a surprise if United decide to cash in on the youngster this summer.

With his game time at United taking a hit, Williams may be better served to take his talents elsewhere. Southampton, meanwhile, are also keeping tabs on Liverpool’s Neco Williams and Brentford’s Rico Henry. (h/t The Southern Daily Echo)
