Watford striker wants Manchester United defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka in England squad
Watford captain Troy Deeney was talking to TalkSPORT (h/t Metro) and mentioned that he wants to see Manchester United right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka in the England squad over Chelsea man Reece James.
Gareth Southgate is spoilt for choices at right-back. Trent Alexander-Arnold, Reece James, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, and Kyle Walker are vying for a spot.
The United defender, however, is yet to be capped for the Three Lions. This is despite him impressing heavily at Manchester United since his £50million transfer from Crystal Palace back in 2019.
But Deeney, who has spent 5 seasons in the Premier League, thinks that the Red Devils right-back should be in the England team over Reece James because of his defensive nous.
“I don’t think Reece James goes over Wan-Bissaka. He doesn’t always start for Chelsea, that’s a main (reason). But I just think Wan-Bissaka is so good defensively.”
Still awaiting his England debut
James started for England in their 5-0 win over San Marino last week, while Kyle Walker took the field in the Three Lions’ 2-0 triumph over Albania in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers during this international break.
And Deeney says he would pick Wan-Bissaka over Kyle Walker too, who has blistering pace down the right-hand side.
“I’d back (Wan-Bissaka) or Kyle Walker because he’s so fast. But I’d have Wan-Bissaka. For me, Wan Bissaka has to be in there in the squad. He’s the best defender we have at the right-back option.”
Wan-Bissaka is one of the first names on the sheet for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. He already has 42 appearances for the club this season and barring any mishaps, he would touch the 50 mark.
