Former Manchester United goalkeeper thinks David de Gea could leave the club
Speaking in an interview (h/t Mirror), Chris Turner thinks that Dean Henderson could force David de Gea to consider a transfer away from Manchester United in the upcoming 12 months.
The Englishman returned to Old Trafford after his loan spell ended at Sheffield United. And since then, he and De Gea have been competing to become United’s No.1 under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
The Spaniard, who joined United in 2011, seemed to be winning that race as he retained his spot between the sticks. But recently, Henderson has started in 6 consecutive games due to De Gea flying out to Madrid for the birth of his child.
The 30-year-old is back from his isolation spell, and Turner believes that if he fails to start against Brighton and Hove Albion on April 4, then it may be a sign that Solskjaer is moving on to Henderson as his first-choice keeper.
“I’m not sure when the shift will come, but if Dean keeps his place against Brighton after the international break the writing will be on the wall for De Gea.”
Dean for De Gea
Turner, who played for United in the 1980s under Ron Atkinson and Sir Alex Ferguson, thinks Henderson can be the United goalkeeper for the next 10 years. And in that case, De Gea would have to look elsewhere for game time.
“Dean has emerged as a genuine threat and is proving himself a capable keeper who will only get better with more experience. There’s no way De Gea will want to play second fiddle to a younger keeper so maybe he’ll look to move back to Spain in the next 12 months.”
The former Atletico Madrid goalkeeper was called up to the Spain national squad this week but did not start against Greece. Instead of him, Unai Simon was in goal for Luis Enrique’s side. (h/t Transfermarkt)

In fact, De Gea has been benched in 14 of Spain’s last 20 games. And he would know that regular game time at a competitive level would be necessary to continue being La Furia Roja‘s first choice.
