Liverpool leading the race to sign Manchester United transfer target Kalidou Koulibaly
Ian McGarry of the Transfer Window podcast (h/t Express) has stated that Liverpool are leading the race for Manchester United target Kalidou Koulibaly after making an informal offer for him.
The player has been linked with a Premier League move for a while. He was close to joining Manchester City last summer, while his links with Manchester United are no secret at this point.
But the Reds are apparently taking the lead in signing the player by tabling an informal offer of around £34.2million. His contract at Napoli does not expire before the summer of 2023.
“It is our understanding that an informal offer to begin with of €40m (£34.2m) plus add-ons has been made for the player, who’s certainly available.’
Koulibaly to Anfield?
The German manager sees him as an ideal partner for Virgil van Dijk in the heart of their defence. With their injury problems this season, it is no wonder that the Merseysiders are interested in the former KRC Genk man.
“Koulibaly has had interest from Manchester City and Manchester United. But Liverpool look to be leading the race now in a reduced-price market for a player.”
And this comes after reports of Everton also being in the race for the Senegalese international. United would benefit by signing someone as experienced and solid as Koulibaly.
Given Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly’s inconsistency in the starting XI, having a pinned starter in Koulibaly alongside Harry Maguire might just help the club’s defensive record.

The 29-year-old has loads of top-flight experience and would make the United backline solid. But it remains to be seen if United battle other clubs for the Napoli defender’s signature.
