Alan Shearer gives his take on the goalkeeper situation at Manchester United
According to Manchester Evening News, Alan Shearer feels that Manchester United have a healthy competition for the goalkeeper spot. He felt that Dean Henderson has taken his chance to capitalise on the errors made by David De Gea. He felt that it was a good thing that two keepers are vying for the spot.
While it might be premature to say this, it is very likely that Dean Henderson is Manchester United’s first-choice keeper right now. The English shot-stopper has now played his 6th consecutive game, starting in important matches in the Europa League and FA Cup, while also being handed rare starts in the league.
David De Gea has been out of action since the Chelsea game due to paternity leave and mandatory isolation after travel. However, it seems as if his undisputed position is now over given Henderson’s performances in the last few weeks.
Former Newcastle striker Alan Shearer felt that Dean Henderson deserves to be No.1 because De Gea made too many errors.
“He deserves his spot, there’s no doubt about that, Dean Henderson. De Gea has made too many errors, the time was right to put him in and he certainly hasn’t disappointed. He’s kept seven clean sheets in his last eight games.
He made the error a couple of weeks ago against Milan, but he’s recovered well from that. He’s been out on loan, did very well there, made the decision to come back, signed a long-term contract and there’s no doubt he deserves to be playing.”

Nonetheless, he added that having De Gea as a competitor for Henderson would serve them well. Given the current state of things, De Gea will likely have to wait for his chance because Henderson has done nothing that warrants him to be dropped.
