Manchester United looking to sell David de Gea and Sergio Romero to bring in Emiliano Martinez
A report by Football Insider (h/t Express) claims that Manchester United are looking to ‘revamp’ their goalkeeping department by offloading David de Gea and signing Aston Villa star, Emiliano Martinez.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has no shortage of goalkeepers currently. The competition is so cut-throat that Sergio Romero has failed to make the United squad this season.
The Argentine goalkeeper was a solid back-up to David de Gea in the previous seasons but has fallen down the pecking order after Dean Henderson returned to Old Trafford from his loan spell at Sheffield United.
Since then, the competition for the starting spot between the sticks has been between the Englishman and the Spaniard. Solskjaer mentioned that de Gea is still United’s No.1 at the start of the season.
Time for a change?
Before De Gea travelled to Madrid for the birth of his child, Henderson has had to be content with starts in the domestic cup competitions. He has now managed to start 6 games in a row.
The 23-year-old has highly impressed with his displays as United have kept clean sheets in 5 of those games. Over the season, he has also kept more clean sheets (12) than he has let in goals (10). (h/t transfermarkt)
But the report highlights that United want to sign Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez as his competitor for next season. This would mean the club offloading the 30-year-old De Gea and the 34-year-old Romero.
The former Sampdoria man made his intentions of leaving the club clear at the start of the season. Were it to happen, this would be a very drastic change indeed. (h/t Express)
