Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to hold final say on Manchester United transfers
According to Manchester Evening News, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed that he still has the final say in transfers at Manchester United despite John Murtough taking over as Football Director.
Darren Fletcher was also appointed Tecnhical Director following a shakeup at the club earlier this week.
Murtough is a long time servant of the club and has been around since the David Moyes era. His recent promotion came after impressive work especially with the women’s team and in the academy.
The 47-year-old’s new responsibilities include recruitment, but Solskjaer has revealed that he holds the veto when it comes to the final say. As the man entrusted to get the results on the field, it is fitting that the Norwegian has the power.
“I think the managers at Manchester United have always had the last say (on transfers). The club would never buy a player that the manager of Man United didn’t want.”
Solskjaer has so far enjoyed more hits than misses at United. The likes of Bruno Fernandes, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Harry Maguire are all regulars in the first-team, while Daniel James has also had his share of success.
Of the recent signings, Edinson Cavani has been a good short-term addition, but Alex Telles and Donny van de Beek have both struggled to make an impact.
While he admits every member in the recruitment team has a say, the final call comes down to the manager.
“We do have a process. We’ve got the scouting and then the analysis, but it is always about the manager’s remit.”
Solskjaer has a good working relationship with both Murtough and Fletcher. Hopefully, the trio can guide us to a better tomorrow.
