Nikola Milenkovic admits he looked up to Manchester United legend Nemanja Vidic growing up
Speaking to Fiorentina’s official website, Nikola Milenkovic has revealed that he looked up to Manchester United legend Nemanja Vidic growing up.
The 23-year-old is amongst the best young defenders in Serie A and has garnered interest from a number of teams from across Europe. United, who are in the market for a new centre-back, have also been keeping tabs on the Serbian international.
Rumours linking him to a move to Old Trafford have picked up in recent months. United have been in contact to ‘find information’ about the signing. However, it is not clear whether that contact is with Fiorentina or the player’s representatives.
Any switch to Manchester United would see Milenkovic follow in his role model’s footsteps. The defender looked up to Vidic who moved to United in January 2006.
“When I was little, Serbian defender Vidic, who played for Manchester United, was my idol.”
The Serbian colossus went on to make 300 appearances for the Red Devils, forming a formidable partnership with Rio Ferdinand at the heart of the United defence. How United could do with one now.
To follow in the footsteps of a legend
Milenkovic admits that he still watches highlights of the United hero even today. One of the finest defenders in his heyday, there are few better to learn from.
“He was a very strong defender: I still watch the videos of his highlights today.”
While the 23-year-old’s comments are by no means an endorsement for United to come get him, a chance to follow in his hero’s footsteps could prove tempting. The Red Devils now have a bargaining chip with which they can entice the young defender.

At a modest €30million, Milenkovic represents value for money. The Red Devils will face competition for the player though from AC Milan, Inter Milan, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur.
