Pep Guardiola reveals why he passed on securing Edinson Cavani
According to Manchester Evening News, Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has revealed why he passed on signing United ace Edinson Cavani last summer.
The 34-year-old was a free agent after his contract at Paris Saint-Germain ran out. City were on the lookout for a striker but made no move to land the imperious Uruguayan ace.
Their loss was our gain as United swooped in to secure Cavani on summer deadline day. He has since repaid the club by scoring a slew of important goals.
While Guardiola is a fan of the player, he was happy with the strikers at his disposal and saw no need to make a move for Cavani.
“We have Gabriel (Jesus) and we were waiting for Sergio (Aguero) to come back. Ferran (Torres) can play there really well too.”
The Spaniard also name-checked Cavani as one of the biggest threats United possees. Unfortunately, he was not part of the side that travelled to Etihad to take part in the derby.
“The experience of Cavani, a player I admire the most for what he’s done with his career.”
Cavani originally penned a one-year deal with United. The club, however, does have the option to extend it by another twelve months.
At 34, he isn’t a long-term option. However, he has it in him to offer us an experienced head to call upon for another season.
