Europa League: Paul Scholes believes Manchester United vs AC Milan is a favourable matchup

According to Manchester Evening News, Manchester United legend Paul Scholes believes the club’s Europa League draw against AC Milan is a favourable outcome.

This is in contrast to that of manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer who believes the Italians are formidable opponents. The Red Devils made it to the last 16 after a comprehensive 4-0 win over Real Sociedad.

Milan are in the second spot in Serie A only behind rivals Inter in the pecking order. They can be expected to offer more of a challenge compared to Sociedad. Scholes, however, sees things differently.

“I think United would cruise past Milan.”

Solskjaer, meanwhile, believes Milan will present the exact challenge that United need right now. He believes his side will be up for the match and are looking forward to the tie.

“It’s good for us to have these games to look forward to. This team needs challenges and we enjoy challenges and we embrace them.”

While Milan is a tough opponent, they are not the juggernaut of old who used to take Europe by storm. They have, however, improved in recent months and are admittedly one of the biggest teams left in the competition.

The tie will also see Diogo Dalot and Zlatan Ibrahimovic return to Old Trafford. The former is on loan while the latter enjoyed a shot but fruitful spell under Jose Mourinho at United.

Exciting, but lacks the gravitas of old!

All in all, it is an exciting draw and has the look of a Champions League matchup. The Red Devils have not received many easy draws this season but have so far held their own.

While Scholes has every right to be confident, one can understand Solskjaer being wary. After all, it is he who will be held responsible for the result – for better or worse.

The last time the two teams faced each other at Old Trafford, Wayne Rooney and Kaka put up a masterclass that saw us prevail 3-2. Unfortunately, Milan were the better side in the second leg and won 6-3 on aggregate.

Hopefully this time, we will do better.
