Paul Scholes insists Manchester United are not over-reliant on Bruno Fernandes
Speaking to the club’s official website (h/t Manchester Evening News), Paul Scholes has stated that Manchester United are not overly reliant on Bruno Fernandes.
The midfielder has been arguably the club’s best player since he joined in January 2020. He has had a major hand in most of our success since then and also currently leads the club’s scoring charts this season.
“Are we too reliant on him? No, I don’t think so.”
Scholes believes that the 26-year-old is just doing what he was brought in to do. United lacked a creator from midfield and signing Fernandes has gone a long way in addressing that.
“That is his role in the team. You have to remember United paid a lot of money for this type of player.”
Brought in to add offensive spark to United, Fernandes has more than fulfilled expectations. However, he appears far from done and is instead going from strength to strength.
“He is a player whose job it is to create goals and score goals. Now he is doing that better than we ever imagined.
An incomplete picture!
While Scholes is right in saying that Fernandes is just doing the job he was brought in to do, he has admittedly glossed over the fact that we are indeed reliant on the 26-year-old.
The Red Devils attack is too predictable in the absence of the midfielder and we often have a tough time unlocking defences. It is often Fernandes’ ability to do the unexpected that sees us through in tough situations.

Scholes is right in his assessment that other players also need to step up their performances. Fernandes cannot be expected to carry the burden of the team’s expectations every single game. Unless the team as a whole rises to the occasion, we always run the risk of falling short.
