Transfer News: Manchester United outcast Sergio Romero eyeing a return to Racing
According to Fichajes, Manchester United outcast Sergio Romero could be on the move, with former side Racing an option.
The veteran keeper is out of contract in the summer and has not featured for United since August last year. He appeared to be on his way out last summer but a deal could not be agreed upon.
Romero made his senior bow for Racing in his home nation of Argentina in 2006-07 and could potentially head back for his last hurrah.
The Argentine side are looking for a new goalkeeper next season and manager Jose Antonio Pizzi believes Romero would be the ideal signing.
The player, for his part, is also keen on a move and would welcome the opportunity to link up with Racing once again. Romero is keen to don this former side’s colours in the Copa Libertadores before hanging up his boots.
A brilliant back-up keeper, Romero has fallen down the pecking order after Dean Henderson returned to the club last summer. At 33, he has one last move left in him and it would appear that his homeland beckons.
An act of redemption?
The 33-year-old joined the club in 2015 during the reign of Louis van Gaal. He has been an excellent back-up keeper, who has mostly performed when called upon. Romero has let in in only 27 goals in 61 games for United, keeping an incredible 37 clean sheets. (h/t Transfermarkt)
Given his performances, it can be argued that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could have handled Romero’s situation with more dignity.
According to The Sun, United have added Romero to their Premier League squad to put more pressure on current No.1 David de Gea. With Dean Henderson also pushing for a starting spot, it looks like Romero has played his last game for the club.

Racing are far from the only side keen on Romero. The 33-year-old has also garnered interest from the MLS.
Although the English transfer window has closed, the MLS window only opens on February 10. Romero was linked with a move to David Beckham’s Inter Miami and it remains to be seen if they will make a move to land him.
