Manchester United to focus signing a central defender in the summer

According to MEN, Manchester United are considering bolstering their centre-back department in the summer.

The Red Devils are open to splashing the cash on a central defender depending on how the team fares between now and the end of the season.

Manchester United have a dismal defensive record this season, conceding 30 goals in 23 games – the worst in the division’s top-10. However, we also have the best attacking record in the top-flight.

This contrast in the team’s attack and defence seems to have prompted the club hierarchy to make this decision. Our latest defensive struggle was against Everton as we failed to maintain the 2-goal lead we achieved, eventually succumbing to a 3-3 draw.

According to the report, RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano and Real Madrid star Raphael Varane are on the club’s shortlist.

The arrival of Harry Maguire for a world-record fee hasn’t stopped us from leaking goals this season. It is clear that the Englishman is under extreme pressure and needs a reliable partner alongside him.

Instead of pursuing attackers in the summer, it certainly makes sense for us to strengthen our defence. This certainly seems to be the right decision by the club.

We signed the talented Amad Diallo in January and the youngster has hit the ground running for the U-23s, scoring 3 goals and 3 assists in just two games. Hence, the attacking future seems promising and it’s time we prioritised a central defender.

Despite the inclusion of Phil Jones to the squad, we still need more power at the back in order to challenge the likes of Manchester City for the league title.

The Cityzens have conceded just 14 goals this season so far – the best in the division. This is the kind of defensive ability one must possess to win the most difficult league in the world.
