Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looking forward to Liverpool showdown at Anfield

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has taken his side to the top of the Premier League for the first time in 877 days, and is set to face Liverpool this weekend.

The last time the Red Devils were at the summit in January was in 2013, coincidentally also the last time we won the league. With a trip to Anfield to face defending champions Liverpool next, United’s true credentials will be put to the test.

United have not lost an away game in the league since their 2-0 reversal to Jurgen Klopp’s side at Anfield last season. We could go six clear of them if we prevail at the weekend.

“We’re looking forward to it.”

According to MEN, Solskjaer admits he is looking forward to facing who he calls the best team in the country. Despite their poor form of late, Liverpool are one of the best teams in Europe and could hurt us if we are complacent.

While Solskjaer believes United’s rise is an indication of where the team is at, there is still more than half a season to go.

“We’re almost halfway through the season, so it’s a little bit of an indication of where we’re at but nobody will remember the league table 12 January.”

The trip to Merseyside will be a true test of United’s mettle

Despite our good results, United have been lucky in some of the games this season. There comes a point where we will have to stop depending on fortune and put in performances.

Solskjaer is yet to beat Liverpool in three meetings as a manager. He will now have two opportunities in seven days to set that record straight.

With us also set to face the Merseysiders in the FA Cup fourth round, January could very well be a season-defining month for the Norwegian.

Will Solskjaer and Manchester United end Liverpool’s streak at Anfield

Liverpool are unbeaten at Anfield since April 2017, a Premier League record only bettered by Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea. Ending that streak would be yet another feather in Solskjaer’s cap.

Titles are not handed out in January, but United can take a major leap towards one if they come away with a win on Merseyside.
