Timothy Fosu-Mensah is close to joining Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen
A report by Manchester Evening News states that Manchester United defender Timothy Fosu-Mensah is on the verge of joining Bayer Leverkusen.
The defender turned down a new United contract earlier and now looks set to join the Bundesliga club for a fee close to £1.5million. His current contract expires in the summer of 2021.
This means that the defender is open to discussing terms with foreign clubs in January over a potential free transfer in the summer. It would be commendable if United don’t lose him for free and get a fee for him.
Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer gave a major hint about Fosu-Mensah’s future on Friday. The Norwegian implied that the 23-year-old would be leaving United.
“It might be end of January or in the summer where he finds somewhere else. He’s working hard so he’s ready for a move for any club he feels ready for.”
United were aware of the interest of German teams when they triggered the one-year extension clause in his contract last season. Apart from Leverkusen, Hertha Berlin were linked with the Dutchman.
His former club Ajax were also interested in a move for him and they would be his preferred choice, but that move looks unlikely. (h/t Manchester Evening News).
It is not surprising that the former Ajax player wants a move away from Old Trafford. The opening day defeat to Crystal Palace is his only Premier League appearance this season for the Red Devils.

Fosu-Mensah was also not in the team for the 1-0 win against Watford in the FA Cup. Brandon Williams started at right-back, while Axel Tuanzebe and Eric Bailly were the centre-backs on the night.
