Rio Ferdinand suggests Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could build his team around captain Scott McTominay
Speaking on BT Sport (h/t Metro), Manchester United legend and pundit Rio Ferdinand suggested that Scott McTominay is captain material and someone Ole Gunnar Solskjaer can build his team around.
The Scotsman was the captain on Saturday night as United took on Watford. The FA Cup round 3 fixture ended 1-0, with McTominay scoring the only goal of the match.
The 24-year-old was on the end of a spectacular cross by Alex Telles and made no mistake with the header. He now has 4 goals this season and is one of the most reliable players in Solskjaer’s midfield.
This is something that Ferdinand noticed and he highlighted how the United youth academy product is woven out to be a captain.
Ferdinand points out that McTominay is “wholehearted” on the pitch, covers the ground well and takes responsibility, all of which is the hallmark of a captain. (h/t Metro)
The fulcrum of the team
The former England international then points out how the midfielder is someone Solskjaer can build his team around.
“He’s almost certainly now become one of the main players in that midfield area. And he’s someone I think Ole could build around.”
The player-turned pundit highlighted how the midfield powerhouse isn’t the most creative player but brings certain qualities to the table that other players do not offer.
United are still gunning for trophies on three fronts. The Red Devils could be at the top of the table after a win against Burnley in the Premier League next.
