Manchester United not looking at David Alaba as Dayot Upamecano as potential defensive signings
The Telegraph (h/t Express) reports that Manchester United are not interested in signing David Alaba and Dayot Upamecano to address their defensive concerns.
Manchester United have played much of this season with captain Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof at the back. However, doubts have been cast over the pair’s ability to lead the club to a league title.
The Red Devils have been linked with Bayern Munich defender David Alaba amidst his contract troubles. The 28-year-old has won the UEFA Champions League twice along with multiple league titles.
His pedigree is not in doubt as the Austrian has attracted interest from several other big clubs such as Manchester City, Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain, and Real Madrid. (h/t Express)
Nevertheless, Manchester United will not be a part of any potential ‘tug-of-war’ that might happen over Alaba. The club, however, will still look to prioritize signing a defender in the summer window.
Upamecano not on wishlist anymore
The Red Devils have also been linked with a move for Dayot Upamecano recently. But, the RB Leipzig defender is not on top of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s wishlist anymore. (h/t Express)
Solskjaer could have the funds for a defender in January, but the situation might be the same as it was with the signing of Bruno Fernandes. Any spending in January will be taken out of the summer transfer budget.
On paper, the club does not seem to lack defenders. However, both Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo are not part of the manager’s plans currently.

United, as of now, are the only club in the top 11 of the Premier League table to ship more than 20 goals this season. While the team has looked good going forward, it is visible that the defence can use some fine-tuning.
But with a move for both Alaba and Upamecano off the table, it remains to be seen who the club goes after.
