Manchester United eye Dominic Calvert-Lewin as an alternative for Erling Haaland
According to the Sun, Manchester United eye Dominic Calvert-Lewin as an alternative to Erling Haaland
According to the Athletic (h/t The Sun), Manchester United appear to be ready to turn their attentions to signing Everton ace Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
The 23-year-old is enjoying an excellent season at Everton under Carlo Ancelotti. With 14 goals in just 16 appearances, he has shown the ability to go toe to toe with the best in the league.
The Red Devils were keen on signing Erling Haaland when the striker was at RB Salzburg. However, the Norwegian ace spurned a move to United and signed for Borussia Dortmund.
He has since gone from strength to strength and is amongst the most prolific players in European football. While United’s interest in him has not waned, they might find it difficult to land him.
A major reason for this is the player’s agent, Mino Raiola. The superagent, who also represents Paul Pogba, has a frosty relationship with United.
Raiola had also garnered criticism from United legend, Sir Alex Ferguson, for his role in seeing Paul Pogba leave United for Juventus in 2012. It would appear that eight years later, the agent is at it once again.
Calvert-Lewin at 23 is primed to develop into an exciting forward, who is also a colossus in the air.
Proven in the league
With the newfound prolific nature and his experience of the Premier League, he would be expected to make an instant and telling impact if signed.
While Haaland clearly is the better striker, it would be fair to assume that with Raiola at the helm, there is always the potential for off-field issues to take centre stage.
Both Chelsea and Manchester City were also earlier linked with the player. According to the Express, Everton’s asking price could have put them off.

Calvert-Lewin was a part of the England Under-20 side that won the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2017. He also went on to win the England Under-20 Player of the Year Award in 2018.
Amidst Anthony Martial’s inconsistency and Edinson Cavani’s age, United could do with another striker in the coming windows. Calvert-Lewin could prove to be a very shrewd buy.
