John O’Shea backs Manchester United to challenge Liverpool for the Premier League title
Speaking to Stadium Astro (h/t The Metro), former Manchester United star John O’Shea has backed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side to challenge Liverpool for the Premier League title.
The Red Devils systematically dismantled Marcelo Bielsa’s side 6-2 at home last Sunday. The win took us to within five points of the top with a game in hand.
“I’d have to say yeah they will be contenders, their form and goalscoring ability shows that.”
Despite reversals against Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal, United have regrouped and stayed in the hunt for the Premier League title.

Having won six of our last seven Premier League games, United are gathering momentum going into Christmas.
“A result like [Leeds] makes everyone take notice when you’re in the Premier League no matter what, a bit like Liverpool’s result against Crystal Palace.”
United have shown they have the ability to adapt to different styles. The free-flowing setup against Leeds was in stark contrast to the solid defensive shutout against Manchester City earlier in the month.
Though United may not admit publically they are challengers, O’Shea believes it might not be the case within the club.

“They will be looking at the table in the dressing room, publicly they’re saying they’re not but they’ll be well aware of where they are in the league..”
Defending champions Liverpool currently sit on top of the Premier League. Jurgen Klopp’s side are still the favourites but one would be foolish to write United off.
Solskjaer’s sides have in the recent past shown they have the ability to respond when the chips are down. The more we keep winning games, the louder the title credentials will be heard.

Given that Liverpool will equal our tally of 20 league championships if they triumph this season, there is no better time than now for us to plot a resurgence.
The Red Devils last won the Premier League title under Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013. Time will tell whether United are genuine contenders this season or not.
