Manchester United monitoring Famalicao midfield ace Gustavo Assuncao

According to Spanish publication AS, as relayed by the Express, Manchester United are among a host of clubs keeping a close eye on Brazilian midfielder Gustavo Assuncao.

The 20-year-old started out at the academy of FC Porto before joining the Atletico Madrid youth setup where he grew through the ranks. However, having failed to break into the senior team, Assuncao joined Famalicao in the summer of 2019.

Since moving to Portugal, the defensive midfielder has become a mainstay in the middle of the park, racking up 46 appearances across all competitions, in which he has registered two assists. (h/t Transfermarkt)

While we are well-stocked in the midfield department currently, Nemanja Matic isn’t getting any younger and will need to be replaced eventually in a year or two.

So, making a move for a young and upcoming defensive midfielder like Assuncao wouldn’t be the worst idea for the club.

However, it is being claimed that Manchester United will face stern competition to sign the Brazilian. Our Premier League rivals Everton and Wolverhampton Wanderers are also keen on Assuncao, while Ligue 1’s OGC Nice and La Liga side Sevilla are also in the running. (h/t Express)

It is further claimed that an offer of around £23m would be enough to tempt Famalicao into selling the youngster. (h/t Express)
