Politicians call for Manchester United star Marcus Rashford to be shortlisted for BBC SPOTY

According to Daily Mail, Politicians have called on BBC to modify their rules to ensure Manchester United star Marcus Rashford wins the Sports Personality of the Year award (SPOTY).

The Red Devils ace was the punters’ favourite to win the award. However, he looked set to miss out on the shortlist because the criteria states it must reflect ‘sporting achievements’.

A major aspect that made Rashford the favourite was him being at the forefront of the free school meals campaign.

According to the report, Greater Manchester mayor, Andy Burnham has now backed the striker for the award.

Burnham praised Rashford for making use of his public image for the betterment of others. The United star’s efforts have given hope to a number of country’s forgotten youth.

“Marcus is the first sportsperson of recent times to use the full power of his personality and experience for the benefit of others.”

The Manchester mayor remains confident that the city can put aside its sporting allegiances and unite behind the call to win Rashford the accolade.

“I know Greater Manchester will put footballing differences aside and unite behind this campaign to make him SPOTY 2020.”

Growing support

Burnham is hardly the only politician to endorse Rashford. Labour MP Graham Stringer who represents Blackley and Broughton, and Tracey Rawlins, a Labour councillor who works at a Wythenshawe food bank have also thrown their weight behind the United star.

The latter in particular believes that the BBC SPOTY is a people’s award. She believes it resonates more with the public and given his impact, Rashford would be a worthy winner.

“Sports Personality of the Year is an award that resonates with the public more than the honours system. It’s a people’s award.”
