Manchester United star Chris Smalling agrees on personal terms with Roma
According to Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio (h/t Express), Manchester United star Chris Smalling has agreed on personal terms with AS Roma.
This takes the 30-year-old a step closer to a return to the Italian capital, where he spent last season on loan.
Smalling rolled back the years as he went on to become one of the best defenders in the league. That came as a boon for United, who are now finding it easier to sell the veteran star.
European giants Inter Milan were also keeping tabs on Smalling. Roma were however the frontrunners, with the player too favouring a return to the Stadio Olimpico.
United and Roma have been in negotiations regarding a move. However, the Red Devils’ £18million asking price had led to a slowdown in progress.
Roma for their part were willing to pay around £13m. According to the report, they could find themselves flush after selling Patrik Schick to Bayer Leverkusen for £24m. This influx of cash could help them make an improved offer more to United’s lacking.
The report goes on to claim that Smalling will sign a one-year deal at Roma. Talks between the two clubs are set to intensify in the coming days, hinting at the deal reaching a conclusion.
The 30-year-old will not be the only defender who could leave United this summer. He could be joined by both Marcos Rojo and Phil Jones, both of who are attracting attention from other clubs. (h/t Express)
None of the three players played a key role in our campaign last year. It makes sense for the club to cash in on the fringe players. It not only boosts our transfer kitty but will also help lower the wage bill.
