Ruud Gullit wants Manchester United to sign Dayot Upamecano

Speaking on beIN Sports (h/t Express), former Chelsea star Ruud Gullit has urged Manchester United to make a move for RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano this summer.

Having come through the youth ranks at Valenciennes in France, Upamecano joined RB Salzburg in 2015. He spent eighteen months at the Austrian outfit, before switching to sister club RB Leipzig in January 2017.

Since joining the Bundesliga outfit, Upamecano has grown into one of the most sought-after young defenders across Europe. The 21-year-old has been an integral part of the Leipzig side that has made great strides over the past couple of years.

Having helped them finish third in the Bundesliga, Upamecano put in a stellar performance against Atletico Madrid, as Leipzig eliminated them to qualify for the Champions League semi-finals.

And, following his performance against the La Liga side, Gullit has urged United to make a move for the Frenchman. The former Netherlands international cited the example of our arch-rivals Liverpool, who turned their defence into an impregnable unit on their way to success. (h/t Express)

“I think I saw something amazing with Leipzig and Dayot Upamecano. He was outstanding [against Atletico Madrid]. He can play football, he’s hard in the tackle. Defence is what I would start if I was Man Utd.”

Our defence has performed ably in the second half of the season. But there is still a sense that we could further improve our options, as neither Victor Lindelof nor Eric Bailly has been entirely convincing alongside Harry Maguire.

Recent reports claimed that manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was looking for a new partner for Maguire. And Upamecano, based on his performances for Leipzig, would be a brilliant signing.

And at 21, the Frenchman would be a long-term prospect for the club as well. However, he did sign a new contract with the Germans only last month. So, prying him away might prove to be a difficult task.
