Responding to the speculations on social media, Leipzig have issued a reminder of the fact that Upamecano signed a new contract with the club only last month.

The Bundesliga outfit retweeted their announcement of the deal with the caption ‘ICYMI’ (In case you missed it).

Leipzig also went on to share a video from the official Champions League Twitter account of Upamecano impressing in the club’s Champions League quarter-final win over Atletico Madrid. This one was captioned: “That’s our centre back”.

Having been with Leipzig since 2017, Upamecano has grown into one of the most coveted young defenders across Europe. His towering physical frame, coupled with his ability on the ball would make him a great fit at our club.

Upamecano’s previous contract had a release clause worth €60m. However, his latest deal has a lower buyout clause set at €42m. But it will only come into effect next summer. (h/t Daily Star)

Our defence was pretty rock solid over the second half of last season. However, Victor Lindelof hasn’t been consistent enough, whereas Eric Bailly continues to be an unreliable presence due to his injury issues.

Given Harry Maguire’s recent off-the-field issues, he might struggle to start the season at his best as well. So bringing in someone like Upamecano, who will be a long-term solution to our defensive problems, would be a great move.

We have been quite slow in the transfer market so far. With the season just a couple of weeks away, it is high time we brought in a few new faces into the side.
