A costly miscalculation – Man United forced to pay off superstar to cut losses

Alexis Sanchez

Manchester United paid Alexis Sanchez £9m to leave for Inter Milan

According to the Daily Mail, Manchester United finally got rid of Alexis Sanchez by giving him a multi-million dollar pay-off.

However, it was an example of taking one step back to take a leap forward. United are very happy despite shelling out £9m to pay off Sanchez. Had he stayed at United, the club would have had to pay him around £50m during the remaining two years on his contract. (h/t Daily Mail)

The Red Devils also waived off a transfer fee to get the deal over the line. Sanchez has finally joined Inter Milan on a three-year deal worth £130,000-a-week. (h/t Daily Mail)

The Chilean endured a difficult time at United since moving from Arsenal in 2018. Having fallen the pecking order, he was loaned out to Italian giants Inter Milan.

His time in Italy started off with his usual struggles with injuries and poor form. He experienced an upturn in form since the restart and played a key role in Inter’s title push.

Sanchez has scored three goals and eight assists in 13 games since June as the Nerazzurri finished Serie A in second place, a single point behind Juventus.

His performances finally convinced Inter to make the deal permanent. Sanchez is now free to continue playing for the Italians in the Europa League. He could face United in Cologne if both clubs make it through to the final on August 21.

More Manchester United

With Sanchez gone, the iconic number seven shirt has also been freed up at United.

Whisper it slowly but whether it is a sign that Jadon Sancho is on his way to Old Trafford or not remains to be seen.
