Angel Gomes has signed for French side LOSC Lille
According to the Metro, former Manchester United protege Angel Gomes has signed for French Ligue 1 side LOSC Lille.
Having come through the club’s academy, United had high hopes for Gomes. The playmaker made his debut aged just 16 during Jose Mourinho’s time in charge at Old Trafford.
Despite United being keen to retain him, Gomes left the club as a free agent this summer. A major reason is a lack of playing time afforded to him, he made just five Premier League appearances all season.
The youngster’s performances saw him win the club’s Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year Award in 2017. He also became the first player born in the 21st century to represent United in the league.
Unfortunately, our aim to see him fulfil his potential at Old Trafford has come to nought. Barcelona and Chelsea were also keen on signing Gomes but he has now found his way to France.
According to the report, the 19-year-old has signed a five year deal with Les Dogues. Lille has a history of developing promising players. This should cater to fulfilling Gomes’ potential.
The youngster is convinced that the French side will offer him the opportunity to make a name for himself at the senior level. He could, however, have to spend a year on loan at Portuguese side Boavista. (h/t Metro)
Despite ending his 13-year-association with United, he remains a Red at heart. Gomes took to Instagram to send a heartfelt message to the club and its supporters earlier today.
