Speaking to MUTV (h/t MEN), Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed that defender Luke Shaw will not feature again this season due to injury.

The left-back was taken off with an ankle injury in the disappointing 2-2 draw with Southampton. He has not featured since and will not do so now until next season.

It will be disappointing news to both Shaw and United, with the Europa League set to restart next month. The 25-year-old has emerged as a key player under Solskjaer and has revived his career at Old Trafford.

There was some hope that he would be fit to face Leicester City after being pictured driving himself to Carrington earlier this week. Unfortunately, Solskjaer has confirmed that it was just a faux pas.

“Luke will be out until next season, that’s a blow for him and a blow for us because he’s been fantastic.”

Youngsters Timothy Fosu-Mensah and Brandon Williams have deputized for Shaw during his absence. The former looks like the preferred choice and could continue now as the club’s first-choice left-back.

Shaw was the club’s Player of the Season for 2018/19. It represents a remarkable achievement for a player who looked out of sorts and out of shape at Old Trafford earlier.

Williams has shown promise but will need to step up in the Europa League. His lack of experience was at show against West Ham United. Hammers winger Jarrod Bowen ran rings around him and tormented him all game.

United made Shaw the most expensive teenager in world football when they bought him from Southampton in 2014. Five years on, he is increasingly showing why that was the case.

Shaw has made 33 appearances for the club, scoring once and assisting three more this season. (h/t Transfermarkt)
