Alan Shearer gives verdict on Mason Greenwood
According to the Sun, England legend Alan Shearer has tipped Manchester United wonderkid Mason Greenwood for a bright future for both club and country.
The 18-year-old has thrived at United this season. He has scored 15 goals and 5 assists in 41 games in an extraordinary breakout season at Old Trafford. (h/t Transfermarkt)
“If he keeps going at this rate, he could emerge as a world star in the coming years.”
The youngster has formed a triumvirate alongside Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford. He scored his first brace for the club against Bournemouth as we temporarily overtook Chelsea to fourth spot.
Shearer believes United were right to keep the player at Old Trafford rather than loan him out. It proves to be an inspired decision with every passing gameday.
A clinical striker, Shearer has likened Greenwood’s progress to his younger days.
“He actually reminds me of what I used to do, shifting the ball on to the right foot before getting as much power as possible behind the shot.”
The 18-year-old could benefit greatly from the Euros being postponed next season. With a whole year to impress Gareth Southgate, Shearer has backed him to make it to the England squad.
“I would not be surprised if he gets a call-up later this year.”
There are very few players who make the same impact as Greenwood at such a young age, especially at a club of United’s stature. He can only get better with time. For United, there can be no better outcome.
