Marcos Rojo set for Manchester United return

Speaking to Radio Late 931 via Sport Witness (h/t MEN), Estudiantes manager Leandro Desabato has revealed that he expects Marcos Rojo to return to Manchester United.

The 30-year-defender is currently on loan in his homeland, having fallen down the pecking order at Old Trafford.

With a year more to go on his United contract, Desabato isn’t certain that the centre-back will stay when his deal expires at the end of June. He said,

“We have to wait, but Rojo is likely to leave”

He has also gone on to admit that he would understand if United preferred not to extend the loan.

Rojo has only made a single appearance for Estudiantes. This is due to injuries before coronavirus put a halt to the season.

The lack of game time had come as a big blow to Rojo. He is keen to remain in Argentina when his loan expires. Rojo had earlier claimed that he would have talked to the United management to let him stay another six months.

The defender has been at United for five-and-a-half years. He was signed from Sporting Lisbon in the summer of 2014 for £16million. Capable of playing in central defence and at left-back, Rojo has made 122 appearances for the Red Devils.

With the club’s debts mounting due to the coronavirus crisis, money is at a premium. Selling Rojo will help supplement the funds available for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to spend in the summer.

It will also help us free up the wage bill in anticipation of more signings. It is difficult to see Rojo regain his place in the United squad. At 30, he is also not going to be a long-term option.

The club will do well to extend his loan if we can get Estudiantes to add an ‘obligation to buy’ clause.
