Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to reignite Pietro Pellegri interest

According to Italian transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio (h/t Express), Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is set to reignite interest in Monaco starlet Pietro Pellegri.

The youngster was on the club’s radar for a number of years including under former boss Jose Mourinho. Solskjaer looks to go one better and bring the player to Old Trafford this summer.

The 19-year-old, who burst onto the scene at Genoa, moved to French giants Monaco in 2018.

Injuries, however, have proven to be his bane at the Stade Louis II. In his two years at the club, he has made just six appearances while scoring one goal. He has missed a whopping 79 games due to a spate of injuries. (h/t Transfermarkt)

According to Di Marzio, this has not put off Solskjaer, who is still keen to sign the player.

“Despite suffering numerous injuries since he joined Monaco, Pietro Pellegri remains a very attractive target on the transfer market.”

Having turned 19 this year, Pellegri became the first player born in 2001 to score a goal in Serie A. He achieved this distinction in just his third game for the club against Roma.

Time to make things right

Monaco are set to offer him a chance at being a starter next season to meet his ambitions at the club. However, Di Marzio suggests the player’s future is still undecided.

“His heart is in Italy, his mind in France and he has a strong suitor in England.”

United have focussed on bringing in young talents to the club. If he does eventually make the move, Pellegri will join a host of talented youth at Manchester.

Pellegri was one of Europe’s hottest young players before he moved to Monaco. Injuries have since seen him fall out of the spotlight.

At just 19, the youngster has time on his side to get into shape and improve his fitness. Given his mercurial talent, he might be a talent worth taking a chance on.
