Manchester United backed to sell out of favor duo to fund Jadon Sancho transfer
According to ESPN FC pundit Gab Marcotti (h/t Express), Manchester United can sell both Alexis Sanchez and Chris Smalling to free up the necessary wages to accommodate Jadon Sancho.
The Borussia Dortmund wonderkid is one of the most sought-after players in world football. Despite being just 20, he has scored 17 goals and has provided 20 assists in 37 appearances in all competitions this season. (h/t Transfermarkt)
His contract expires in 2022, with Dortmund demanding around £100million for his services this summer.
His potential arrival could hit United’s wage bill. However, Marcotti believes the Red Devils do not need to get rid of Pogba to balance the books. Instead, he believes selling Sanchez and Smalling would be the better option.
“But those two guys together, you look at their wages and that is substantially more, for example than what Paul Pogba earns.”
Both Sanchez and Smalling are out on loan in Italy at Inter Milan and Roma respectively.
Smalling has gone on t enhance his reputation as a key member of the Roma squad. The same however cannot be said of Sanchez who has struggled with both form and fitness at the San Siro.
Sanchez has proven to be one of the worst pieces of business in the club’s history. To put things into perspective, United have spent a combined £64.65m on the player, with minimal returns.
To compound United’s misery, the current pandemic could increase the financial burden on clubs, further ensuring that no one comes forward to take the Chilean off our hands.
Just getting the Chilean out will free up £500,000-a-week in wages. Whether the club can find an interested party or not remains to be seen.
