Arturo Vidal to reject Man United for Newcastle if Allegri takes over
According to Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo (h/t Daily Star), Barcelona star Arturo Vidal will reject Manchester United in favour of Newcastle United if Massimiliano Allegri takes over at St. James Park.
Mike Ashley’s turbulent reign on Tyneside could be coming to an end, with the Magpies in the midst of a £300million takeover with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.
According to the report, the Chilean is a target for Newcastle. Man United were seen as the favourites to sign the player who has endured life as a back-up at the Nou Camp this season.
Whether he moves to Newcastle or not depends on the Magpies’ ability to sign former Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri.
The Italian has been out of a job since leaving the Turin giants last summer. Allegri will already be familiar with the Chilean, having coached him at Juventus during the 2014-15 season.
No harm done
If Vidal does indeed snub us, it should be taken as a positive. At 32, the Chilean is not getting any younger and will not prove to be a long-term option for us.
United have preferred to buy young, promising players in the last few windows. It makes no sense for us to buy a player who is on the wane and will only get slower with time.
It makes better sense for us to invest in a younger player who can be an option for us in the years to come. Vidal is at best a stop-gap choice and it is something we should try to avoid.
United have erred earlier in signing one Chilean, a decision for which we are paying even today. Hopefully, history will not repeat itself.

Vidal was an excellent midfielder in his prime and formed an effective partnership alongside Paul Pogba at Juventus. He is anything but that today.
That was, however, six years ago and a lot has changed since. Hopefully, it will be Newcastle and not us who will regret placing their faith in a ‘has been’.
