Man United look to pip City for Leipzig star Dayot Upamecano
According to Sky Sports, Manchester United are set to battle it out with local rivals Manchester City for RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano.
The 21-year-old is one of the world’s best young defenders and has established himself as the lynchpin of Julian Nagelsmann’s back four at Leipzig.
Upamecano has one more year left on his contract which expires in 2021. He has a release clause worth £52.5million in his current deal.
Interest in the player is high, with the likes of Bayern Munich and Barcelona also in the fray for his signature. (h/t MEN)
The futures of Chris Smalling and Phil Jones are up in the air and selling them without bringing in replacements will leave us short-staffed at the back. Meanwhile, we also continue to be linked to Napoli powerhouse Kalidou Koulibaly.
The primary competition for Upamecano is likely to come from City, who are looking to sign two defenders this summer. Pep Guardiola’s side have had a worse defensive record than title rivals Liverpool. The Spaniard is keen to set that record straight this summer. (h/t Sky Sports)
However, it has also been reported that a defender is not a priority for Ole Gunnar Solksjaer, who is focussed on signing Jadon Sancho, James Maddison and Jack Grealish. (h/t MEN)

United have done well in recent windows to strengthen key areas of the squad. Another defender to play alongside Harry Maguire should help us tighten things at the back as we look to make our way back to the top.
