Manchester United legend Paul Scholes believes that the club is not strong enough to challenge Liverpool or Manchester City this season.
The Red Devils bought three players in the off-season while Liverpool and Manchester City also strengthened their respective squads.
The former England international was quoted by the Mirror as saying:
“When you look at Manchester City, possibly Liverpool, I don’t think they [United] have the quality of those two teams at the minute.
“Liverpool have made some really good signings. United finished above them last season.”
The legend also had a pop at our playing style while comparing it to Manchester City’s.
“I just don’t see United getting closer to City. City are a really good side, great manager, some great players, a way of playing that they all know about and Manchester United seem to be not too sure what’s going on.”
United started the season with a 2-1 win over Leicester City but it was not the most convincing victory.
Liverpool won their opener 4-0 against West Ham while Manchester City were comfortable in their 2-0 win away to Arsenal.
Scholes further added that he was not sure how the team would perform week in week out and claimed that he does not see the Red Devils challenging for the Premier League title this season.
The former United man does have a point in saying that we did not buy enough quality in the summer as only Fred seems like first-team material.
However, we still have a lot of quality in Paul Pogba, Juan Mata, Romelu Lukaku, Alexis Sanchez and a host of others. If Mourinho plays his cards right, we could still mount a title challenge.
