Are United Really In The Race To Sign Falcao?

Radamel Falcao is one of Europe’s most feared strikers. We know that. The Columbian hit-man’s set to score 30+ goals for the fourth consecutive season and will certainly play in La Liga and/or the Premier League in the very near future. We know that.

Falcao for the best part of a year has been heavily linked with both Chelsea and Manchester City. However this week Marca claimed that he could be heading to Old Trafford as Manchester United are now in ‘advanced talks’ to sign the Columbian strikesman.

How much truth is there in the Marca rumour? We don’t know. Logically United would love to sign Falcao, who wouldn’t? However they already have four exceptional strikers with some talented ones coming through in the reserves.

Whilst there’s no doubt that Falcao would score goals in England and that United have enough money to buy him, can you really imagine him coming to United and not being an automatic starter. Robin van Persie is first-choice alongside Wayne Rooney with Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck waiting in support.

If he were to join the champions-elect realistically he would do so only if one of Rooney or Hernandez leaves the club. Rooney hasn’t been quite at his best this season but he’s not going to leave. Hernandez possibly, but he’s had an excellent season returning to form after an injury-hit 2011/12 season and someone of his quality isn’t someone that you’d want out of your football-club.

Saying that though Hernandez could well be sent to Athletico Madrid as part of an exchange deal and if push came to shove if he was going to be a regular starter in La Liga you wouldn’t blame him if he were to agree to that deal. After all going to Spain hardly killed of Diego Forlan and Guiseppe Rossi’s careers did it?

There’s a good chance that Falcao’s agent no doubt is in cahoots with Marca and they have just come up with this rumour as a bit of tease in order to force Chelsea and/or City to splash the cash now and get the deal done as soon as possible.

However anything can happen in football as we well know. We will just have to wait and see.

  1. The story seems to have some legs to be honest. Falcao is the best number 9 striker in the world. I'm not saying it will happen, but if it did, then its over for Rooney. I would support replacing Rooney with a striker of Falcao qualities.
