Manchester United came out with a draw against Aston Villa on Sunday as they endured their worst start to the season in history; however, amid all the struggles at Old Trafford, former Chelsea manager Graham Potter has been left impressed by the Manchester Reds’s veteran defender Jonny Evans.
Potter might have been keeping a keen eye on the proceedings at the Red Side of Manchester, with Erik ten Hag’s future at the club uncertain. The former Ostersund manager was doing exactly so last weekend when United visited Villa Park, and Potter found himself in the studio giving his thoughts on the game.
Potter impressed by Evans’ masterclass against Villa
He acknowledged how Jonny Evans left an impression on him, speaking highly of how the centre-back used his smartness to get in important places and help United.

Speaking on BBC Match of the Day 2, Potter said:
“And in the right position on time. For any young defenders watching, this was almost a masterclass in how to use your strengths and combat what the opponent can do to you.”
Bold decision by Erik ten Hag pays off
Many jaws gasped when ETH decided to drop Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt following their horrendous display against Porto. The Dutch coach started a duo of Maguire and Evans at the heart of defence. But that bold change did pay off, as Manchester Reds kept their fifth clean sheet of the season.
Credit is due to Evans for putting in that performance, but now for United, it is about finding ways to win and accumulate points on the table as pressure continues to build on Erik ten Hag.
