Manchester United have been tracking Sverre Nypan since April of this year
Manchester United were one of Europe’s active clubs in the summer transfer window. A central defensive midfielder was high on Erik ten Hag’s agenda, with the Dutch tactician eventually having his wish granted as Manuel Ugarte arrived from Paris Saint-Germain on the transfer deadline day.
In addition to Ugarte, the Red Devils brought in Joshua Zirkzee, Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, Noussair Mazraoui and Sekou Kone to continue their squad rebuild under Erik ten Hag. INEOS—in their first transfer window as the co-owners—focused on recruiting young, hungry and prodigious talents with potential. Not only did the Red Devils make smart investments, but they also managed to shift the majority of the deadwood off their books.
While the 2024/25 season is just a few weeks old, it seems INEOS have already started planning for the future. According to a report from Norwegian channel TV2Sport, Manchester United had a scout in attendance at Arasen Stadion on Sunday to watch Rosenborg BK talent Sverre Nypan in action against Lillestrom SK.
The Norwegian talent could only last 72 minutes on the pitch in Rosenborg’s hard-fought 1-1 draw with Lillestrom after suffering from illness in the lead-up to the game.
Sverre Nypan has already established himself as an important player for Rosenborg despite being only 17 years old. He has scored five goals and supplied six assists in 20 league games thus far this campaign. The Norwegian midfielder is highly rated across the country and the continent, and he has a bright future ahead of himself.
Man United have been tracking the youngster’s progress at Rosenborg since April 2024. And back in July, the two clubs faced in Norway in a pre-season friendly, and Nypan caught the eye of United staff from close proximity with his technical ability, vision and reading of the game.
The teenage prodigy, who has a contract with Rosenborg until December 2026 (Transfermarkt), is a versatile player who can play as a false 9 or an attacking midfielder but excels particularly in a central midfield role with an eye of getting into the box. The Trondheim-born talent has the technical attributes in his locker but must add physicality to his game to develop into a top-class footballer.

Manchester United could certainly use more quality and depth in the midfield, and Nypan would be a quality long-term investment for them. As such, the Norway under-21 international would add creativity, energy and goals to the side whilst being a long-term Christian Eriksen replacement.
All in all, the Red Devils must try to lure Nypan away from Rosenborg when the transfer window reopens in January.
